Mechanical Tape Erosion Synthesizer with Controlled Thermal Bias Head (Revision 5.1)
Mechanical Tape Erosion Synthesizer with Controlled Thermal Bias Head (Revision 5.1)
OPERATIONAL ABSTRACT
An experimental sound design instrument utilizing heated write heads to deliberately erode magnetic tape emulsions during continuous multi-hour loop playback. Enhanced revision 5 with improved low-noise shielding and updated real-time firmware.
TECHNICAL SUMMARY & TRANSDUCTION DYNAMICS
A solid-state Peltier element modulates recording head temperature up to 60°C, lowering magnetic coercivity and creating warm, fading analog decay characteristics. Calibrated for studio and field use under ZIAA experimental protocols. Harmonic distortion measured under 0.02% across primary operating range.
