TAPE-TENSION: Speculative Continuous Tape Transport Motor Seizure
TAPE-TENSION: Speculative Continuous Tape Transport Motor Seizure
INCIDENT NARRATIVE
In an endurance evaluation of the continuous magnetic loop transport (PROT-007), the dual stepper motor drive ran uninterrupted for 68 hours. Increased bearing friction in the tension pulley led to elevated drive motor temperatures (reaching 78°C). The magnetic tape softened, bound in the capstan nip roller, and melted against the permalloy playback head.
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Inadequate passive heatsinking on stepper motor driver circuits and lack of automated thermal shutdown sensors on the transport chassis.
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
Fitted dual ball-bearing tension guides, aluminum heatsinks with low-noise brushless cooling fans, and automated thermocouple cutoffs.
