DANTE-JITTER: Clock Synchronization Jitter between Remote Dante Nodes
INCIDENT NARRATIVE
During a 24-hour synchronized field recording across the Mojave Desert Sanctuary, an auxiliary network switch dropped IEEE 1588 PTP clock sync packets during a routine buffer burst. Field microphones slipped out of phase with main array recorders, introducing severe acoustic comb-filtering.
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Energy-efficient Ethernet (EEE 802.3az) power saving features on an unmanaged switch caused intermittent micro-delays in PTP timing packets.
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
Replaced all field switches with enterprise managed Cisco switches with hardware PTP boundary clocking and disabled all low-power sleep states.
