SPRING-FATIGUE: Spring Reverb Tank Mechanical Suspension Collapse
SPRING-FATIGUE: Spring Reverb Tank Mechanical Suspension Collapse
INCIDENT NARRATIVE
While measuring acoustic impulse response curves on a custom 3-meter architectural spring reverb tank (PROT-041), excessive continuous test tone levels excited the spring into violent lateral whipping motion. The primary phosphor-bronze coil experienced metal fatigue at the drive transducer clamp and fractured.
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Continuous test tone duty cycles exceeded mechanical tensile fatigue thresholds of hand-wound phosphor-bronze alloys.
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
Upgraded spring alloy to high-tensile music wire steel and added magnetic eddy-current dampers to limit maximum lateral spring excursions.
