HYDROPHONE-SEAL: Hydrophone Pressure Housing Seal Failure at 300m Depth
HYDROPHONE-SEAL: Hydrophone Pressure Housing Seal Failure at 300m Depth
INCIDENT NARRATIVE
During deployment of an acoustic monitoring string into an Arctic fjord at Station Ice-Epsilon, hydrophone unit H-03 ceased data transmission at 285 meters depth. Upon retrieval, saltwater droplets were found inside the titanium electronics pod.
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Sub-zero sea temperatures caused standard nitrile O-rings to harden, compromising the pressure seal under 30 bar water pressure.
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL
Switched all Arctic marine seals to low-temperature fluorosilicone O-rings with dual redundant sealing grooves.
